Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a hands-on treatment performed by Registered Massage Therapists to improve the circulation of lymph within the lymphatic system.
Lymph is a fluid that circulates in the blood along with red and white blood cells, proteins, and nutrients. It is primarily associated with the functions of the body's innate immune system. As it moves from arteries toward capillaries, it separates from the blood through a process called osmosis. Sometimes, this fluid can get trapped in a specific area of the body due to ineffective drainage within the return ducts of the capillaries, a condition known as lymphedema.
Lymphatic massage is thought to affect the lymphatic fluid by helping to coax it back into the body's systemic circulation.
