Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) refer to a group of musculoskeletal disorders that affect the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and related structures. Research suggests that TMJD is commonly associated with other head and neck conditions, such as cervical spine disorders and headaches. RMTs often treat TMJD using both intra and extra-oral techniques. The TMJ is responsible for connecting the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal region of the skull. People who suffer from TMJD may not realize how frequently they use their jaw for activities such as talking, yawning, and eating. If the jaw does not work properly, it can cause significant pain, discomfort, and even postural imbalances if left untreated.
