Trigger point therapy is a technique that is used to treat muscular knots. The process involves applying pressure to the tender muscle tissue to relieve any pain or dysfunction that exists in other parts of the body.
This form of therapy is also known by other names such as TP release, myofascial trigger point work, or the NMT trigger point method. All of these methods involve treating myofibril nodules that develop due to overwork and stress. Registered Massage Therapy can help decrease knots and other areas of focal soft tissue tension by applying firm pressure to a concentrated area while coaching the client to breathe deeply and mentally focusing on releasing the tension to held within the affected musculature.
Trigger points have also been known to produce "referral pain" which often radiates in a specific pattern, or into other adjacent parts of the body. During treatment, your therapist might ask "Does this spot refer anywhere" which is a signal that they might have found a knot which needs to be treated.
